Hi, There is no real need to do a reformat if you are going to use Time Machine to bring apps and data back to your iMac. This process is redundant. The benefits of a reformat are seen because you create a clean install of the MacOS and bring back apps and data via the App Store and other locations. The reformat then restore from Time Machine ensures that everything is brought back from the backup including settings. When doing this, you defeat the purpose of the clean install. With your explanation of what you hope to do, I suggest you simply install Catalina over your existing MacOS. You will not see any benefits from the reformat/install process you're asking about.
