But why are you trying to boot from an external drive? You could try using start up disk under system preferences, Or if you have sighted assistance you could try Holding down the option key at start up and then selecting the bootable option from your list shown on screen. He had to try a couple of times before Cmd-r would work. After the language chooser screen, if it asks for the network password, you should be good to go.
