Hi Donna,

When your HomePod is not playing music, try going into the Home app on your 
iPhone or iPad.  It should see your HomePods.  See if it is telling you that 
there is a problem with a Details button.  I couldn't get it to work properly 
initially by just pressing the Details button and going from there, so I backed 
out, double-tapped the Edit button,  and attempted to mess with things from 
there.  My HomePods said that they had an incorrect Apple ID password and 
offered for me to enter it.  I complied, but it didn't actually ask for the 
password, it just went in.  I decided that it was being stupid, so I went to 
the end of this screen and told the HomePods to restart.  All seems good now, 
although I wasn't seeing as many problems as you were.
