Shirley, the distinction is whether you use the word “update” or the word 
“upgrade”. An upgrade to Catalina requires your permission to do so. Updates 
can be set to happen automatically — these are for installed apps, downloaded 
apps, or incremental updates to your Mac OS. Go to system preferences/Software 
update and you will see there are two different sections, one for upgrades, and 
other for updates.
