Sarah, If you are using Gmail, that is not surprising. I have also seen this on occasion and although I do not have an answer based on verifiable fact, I would have to say it has something to do with Gmail's implementation of imap and how APple Mail reacts to the implementation. It is annoying, but seems to cause no harm or failure in the messages being sent. Although interestingly enough, I have not seen this problem lately and it may have to do with the fact I had to reconfigure all of my mail accounts. I do not know if this would resolve your issue, but my case was rather extreme, so I was forced to reinstall my entire system. That was punishment for carting around the same user account since the days of Tiger I suspect. :)
