With a Finder window open, use CMD + ~ to move focus to the Desktop, and then
use CMD + N to open a new Finder window.
Then use CMD + ~ to switch between open Finder windows.

As an alternative, sometimes you may want to use tabs instead of separate
Finder windows.
To create a new tab in a Finder window, use CMD + T, then use CMD + Tab, (or
CMD + SHIFT + Tab) to move between open tabs in a Finder window.

Here’s something I can’t get to work with any consistency…
I like to have more than one Finder window open at a time, pointing to
different drives or folders. Sometimes I can switch between then using VO+F2
but more often when I go to the desktop to open another volume or folder, the
current one closes. How do I open new windows without closing the current
window?
