Hi, That should not matter as they are still both on the same network. Not sure why your AirPlay button is not showing. Mine is just to the VO-left of the Lyrics button and three VO-rights past the LCD panel. Make sure that AirPlay is enabled on your Apple TV and, this shouldn't matter, but you can go into System Preferences on the Mac, to Sharing, select Media Sharing from the table and make sure that Home Sharing is enabled on the Mac.
It does work fine for me. I do have one of my Macs on ethernet with the ATV on WiFi, but not the other way around like you. Later...
