Many thanks for the suggestions on this. I do have a track pad but I seldom use 
it and its battery always needs charging.
I like Anders idea of a VoiceOver Utility shortcut to toggle mute on and off. I 
went to VoiceOver utility and then commanders and then keyboard commander. I 
looked at the table of commands and added some new ones using the right option 
key. I selected speech and then allocated 1 to decrease volume, 2 to increase 
volume, and 3 to toggle speech mute on and off. I think these shortcuts  will 
be very useful. Pity I did not think of doing this ages ago!
So many thanks to Anders. If anyone wants a step by step on how to add such 
short cuts then please contact me.
