Funny thing, the problem seems to have gone away mainly on its own. The only thing I did that may have fixed it is to run a search on my inbox, and look at a resulting message in the search. Opening a message that resulted from the search was the first time I noticed I could read messages as usual.
I'll monitor the situation.
