Hi,

The internal drive on a Mac does not need defragmented at all.  If it’s an SSD, 
then it should never be defragmented anyway.  If it’s a spinning drive, then 
the MacOS handles disk maintenance on its own and does any cleanup, 
defragmentation such things overnight or first thing when the Mac is power up.  
For external drives, the safest thing to do is the copy to a second drive 
method that I outlined before.  Defragging requires a third party app and is a 
long, not particularly safe process.  Copying to the second drive does the same 
thing, is safer, and gives a sort of backup at the same time.
