This sounds like stating the obvious, however, its worth mentioning that if the event hasn't begun, or if it is connected but no one is yet speaking it can seem as though nothing is happening. I've been confused and/or a little anxious on more than one occasion thinking there were tech issues. I find the worse are the ones that "start " at noon, but then no one actually comes on and begins speaking until a quarter after. . I have found places where it shows time elapsed or says that the event hasn't yet started, ... those help. And yes of course checking the mute button is always a good idea.
