Get sighted assistance is the first thing. But once you've got the machine
up and working it's very easy to use yourself.

I wonder if it is accessible. It doesn't talk about accessibility on
the Amazon website.

Hi,

I tried installing the Kindle for the Mac software, and it isn't
accessible. But maybe some low vision users can report back on their
experience? If you do get the app, you'll start up in the (unspoken)
text field for your Amazon login name. Type that in, press tab, then
type in your password and press return. But the only thing that
VoiceOver announces if you get this working is "Scroll Area", and no
amount of interacting, navigating, etc. gives you anything else spoken.

There may be a reason that the Amazon website doesn't talk about
accessibility.

Cheers,

Esther

It hasn't when your talking about the configuration / settings side of
virtual box. But the menus are accessible. As is the content of the vm. I 'm
using it at the moemtn for a windows 7 vm and its working really well.
Except for a couple of screwed up things. Such as usb drives which I have to
eject from the mac before accepting them in the Virtual box machine.

In most cases virtual box you need to setup filters / profiles for the usb
drives to allow them to through apart from that, it works great.

Hi all,
Since when did virtual box become accessible? Last time I tried it, nothing
could be read by voiceover. What version did this change in?

This is all dependant on the version of file system drivers that are loaded
on the specified operating system.
Windows and Macs look at files in very different ways. A Mac can read
Windows files that are created with the "FAT" file system, but not the
"NTFS" file system. And Macintosh "HFS" and "HFS+" file systems are
generally not usable via a standard windows installation.

You have a few options that are listed out quite well in "Take Control of
Running Windows on a Macintosh" book. In general, the Virtual machines can
do this translation, or you can buy third party FS drivers that will allow
either Read-Only or full access in one ddirection.

In general you are probably safer to use external disk drive formatted in
FAT and just copy the files you want. If you have an on-going need to
transfer files easily when you are in Windows, then the tools to do this
cost less then $100. But for that price you can get a reasonable flash drive
too.

Hi,

Just to correct something. You can actually enable Mac native write and read
support to NTFS partitions by enabling it through Terminal. No extra
software is required to do this. However, if the disk is ever ejected, this
permission will be reversed and you will have to enable it again. As long as
you can actually see your bootcamp partition on the Mac, however, you'll be
fine. It's a longer process, and I probably wouldn't recommend doing it if
you are not comfortable using Terminal and command line interfaces. Also, if
you have third-party drivers which will enable read/write support, it is
recommended to uninstall them. I'm assuming you do not, though, but for
anyone else who wants to attempt doing this.

I'll paste in the link to the post I wrote to Macvisionaries a few months
ago. Sadly, it messed up my pretty formatting. :(

Here you go anyway.

Hi Chad,
Let's not forget TextEdit, the work processor that comes with the Mac. The
price is right, it comes with every Mac, and will do what most people want;
letters, notes, short papers, etc.

I use Mail exclusively so no need for Microsoft Office.

You're quite right, I'd forgotten to mention it, but there's quite a bit
that it can't do unfortunately, such as tables of contents and citations
such as footnotes. If you're a University student or an academic, these
things might be important. It's a shame, because TExtEdit is cool.

Hi,

Have just downloaded the latest version of Skype for mac and am stuck on
finding where I sign in with my Skype name etc. I've tried going to the
"Accounts" menu and logging as another user but as soon as I select the menu
option I'm brought back to the main application screen and can't find where
to enter my info. I've interacted with the screen and all VO is telling is
that there is a Skype TM box and a "graphic" symbol but I can't get it to
tell me anything else?

What am I dong wrong? is there another version of Skype that works well with
VO?

many thanks,

Phil

Slau Halatyn <[email protected]> Mar 17 06:02PM -0400 ^ <>

Hi Phil,

Try launching Skype and, when it launches, rather than interacting with
anything, simply try to tab to a field. This seemed to work for me in an
earlier version of Skype and VoiceOver. Worth at least a try.

thanks again,

Hello:
When the help viewer is launched for an app, what should happen when
you click on the 'Home' button? In my case, nothing happens,
regardless of the app.
I thought you should be able to see the list of all help books on the
system and you can click on a specific one.
Any ideas as to why nothing happens in my case?

Thanks,
mani

popup menu to show up.
Well, I guess it just takes you home.
