On a Mac computer, by default, when pressed by themselves, the F-keys perform 
hardware functions, such as adjusting screen brightness, media controls, volume 
controls, and so on.  In order to have the F-keys perform as normal F-keys, the 
Fn key must be pressed in combination with the desired F-key.

This behavior can be changed in keyboard preferences, so that the behavior of 
the F-keys is reversed.
