Thanks. After this purge, the volume will be pretty empty, but I'm
filling up the source disk pretty fast, so maybe it won't be as long as
I thought before the backup drive is full again. Either way, I'm
archiving this message and will revisit the issue the next time it
happens and I try all the suggested remedies--except the one where I
trash the old backups, of course.

first aid on it via Disk Utility. Maybe, there is something corrupted with a
file or such. I vaguely recall I had to do this with my Time Capsule in the
past in which I directly connected it to my Mac to do a disk repair many moons
ago.
