Well, it appears that none of the controls about what to read are payed attention to in the non-column mode, and even in Column mode when in Big Sur the preview is always read. If you have the ability to move to Outlook, message preview can be controlled there. There are also several other Mail reading applications available, which might have better controls than Macintosh Mail. I find Mac Mail quite quick to launch and read through messages, but its rules system is arcane, and I certainly can do some things in Outlook that are much more difficult in Mac Mail. Oh, and you don't need an outlook.com/Exchange <http://outlook.com/Exchange> e-mail to use out look. It does support other servers. Best wishes,
