To open a bile from the finder, press command-o or VO-space. I was going to review the open dialog before replying, but it has already been too long since you made your query. Essentially, the open dialog acts a bit like a mini finder window if the disclosure button is open. You can change from icon to list to colunn view with command 1 to 3. The serch box changes to a open directory box if you start typing with a /.
