I used the Macintosh app for a while, it is essentially the same as the web
page, or at least it was when I used it. When you launch it the first time, it
will put a QR code on your screen that you need to read with the phone camera.
That will then link your phone and your computer. If I remember correctly most
of the chat information is stored on your phone and then transferred to the Mac
WhatsApp when necessary.
