You can find the elapsed time in the Toolbar. I tried to set a VoiceOver Hotspot there but Hotspots are not very reliable as you might know. And it seems to be difficult if there are several windows open. VoiceOver confuses them when reading the content of the Hotspot.
So CMD + g might be the better choice.
