I'm hoping for the best but there were a couple of things that make this seem, well, odd. First this is just a blog post from Andrew, not an Adobe press release. Does that mean this is not an official stance or that Adobe doesn't consider it press worthy? Also the post calls out specifically MSAA and IAccessible2 but makes no mention of the Apple accessibility API. There is also the somewhat confusing bit about adopting ARIA which is a w3c standard for adding semantic meaning to web widgets. How this would apply to Flash and Actionscript is really unclear. There was one feedback post asking specifically if Flash will be supporting voiceover, but no reply yet. That answer would certainly clarify things. I know Andrew in the past lurked on this list but I don't know if that is still the case. I'm sure that he, like accessibility advocates in many large companies, is pushing against a very large boulder up a very steep slope. I hope that others are coming to his aid.

Hello Chris, Joe:
You are right about Adobe's poor performance in the accessibility
department. Recently, I was forced to use Adobe's Digital Editions
Reader to be able to read some Digital Editions PDF files(DRM?) and
its accessibility was at best, awful.
The good news is that Adobe might have to make the accessibility bar
that Apple has set in its products.
And Joe, you are right, something is better than nothing at all, but
the problem is we have been spoilt by Apple's accessibility
features. :)

My 2.0 cents.

Thanks,
mani

Accessibility for Mac

"Accessibility" of Flash and Flex is currently available on Windows and does
not work very well or at all sometimes with certain AT. They may start
putting some accessibility into the Macintosh version but I would expect
that, at best, it will be a poor solution. This is based on Adobe's history
and I doubt they have found sudden enlightenment but, rather, will do a
minimal job so as to satisfy some state and Federal regulations.
