Hello,

There are several functions that do run regularly to clean up your Mac, but
they run as shell scripts, so unless you are fairly familiar with sh scripting
they probably won't mean much.
Unix has always had these utilities available, and in traditional UNIX systems
they would be run via cron, on modern Mac systems, cron has been replaced by
launchd.
One utility I do find useful is AppCleaner if you drop an App onto this utility
it will find preferences and settings files that are associated with the app
but not bundled with it. You can also just use the file menu. There is a issue
with using the appCleaner with VoiceOver if you have cursor tracking turned on.
Essentially, when you are trying to review the search results a details popup
dialog comes up, but everything else is usable with VoiceOver.

I don't think it can find preference files for applications that are already
deleted, but I believe the trial version of Clean My Mac X will do this and
then if you use App Cleaner to remove any other applications you don't want any
more, you shouldn't need to use Clean My Mac again and you can delete it with
AppCleaner (Smiles)

Oh, the web site for AppCleaner is:
http://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/
