Hi, It sounds to me that you’re making it more complicated than it actually is. When you pull out your iPhone to do the double-press of the side button, simply make sure that it is facing you and the face recognition will happen instantly, then move the iPhone over beside the reader like you do when using your finger-print. Really, it’s not complicated at all, just slightly different. As Dave mentioned, if the “Attention Aware” feature is disabled, which is the recommendation when VO is on, then you should have no difficulties authenticating with Face ID.
