I was not sure from your message if you were unable to turn off direct touch or
if the app still did not respond.
If you are not sure if you turned it off, then try quadruple tapping with two
fingers. In IOS 15 this causes voiceover settings to appear. In the default
list there is a direct touch option. AppleVis' Thomas gave a demo describing
how to customize the list of settings that show up in this list.
