Microsoft Office formats (standardized by the ISO as Office Open XML) are complex; and then I expect there are also the peculiarities of Microsoft’s implementation that have to be taken into account by Apple, the Document Foundation/LibreOffice, and other word processor developers.
Fortunately, I manage to avoid writing important documents in Microsoft Word format. As long as things are kept simple, they usually make it through the conversion process.
