Hi Mark, I have an Apple Watch 7, although this was similar on my Series 3 if I recall correctly. I’m currently using the Australian Voice 2. That is, I have it checked to use my Siri voice in the VoiceOver settings under Accessibility. If I remember right, it was no different when I was using Samantha or Australian Voice 1. In the Notification settings, I have the Notification indicator turned on as well as the Notification Summary.
I did get a text message this morning, and was able to read it on my watch right away, as I checked it within the first bit where it automatically show the notification.
