Hi Lori, a hotspot, is your cell phone is acting as an Internet connection for a secondary device to connect it. So safe for instants, you took your Mac computer. And you connected to the net with it. Since your phone and your Mac are linked to the same Apple ID, your computer will automatically see your personal hotspot, and ask you if you wanna connect. You will simply tell it yes. By doing your quick navigation keys. Then whenever you want to open up Safari or your mail, you will be able to surf the web just like you normally would at home except your hotspot connection from your phone is being your data. I hope this makes sense. And probably since Illinois is not listed as being a covert spot, you may or may not have signal.
