Hello Howard, Marshall, and Others,

Thanks, Howard, for updating us with the reason for your iTunes crashes, and congratulations on getting this fixed. Can I just confirm that this was an issue with your VoiceOver preference settings rather than any of the iTunes preferences? Specifically, you said:

If the mouse cursor tracks the VO cursor, iTunes will crash -- easily
and often -- especially when mucking around with the playlist browser.

so users would want to make sure that under the Navigation options of VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8, press "n", then tab through options) that "Mouse cursor follows VoiceOver cursor" is unchecked? I usually leave this unchecked, but hadn't seen this type of drastic behavior in iTunes. There are some times when turning on mouse cursor tracking of VO cursor is quite useful. Have others seen this issue? I haven't updated my version of iTunes yet.

I was also interested in Marshall's comment regarding upgrading Flip4Mac, so I ran a Google Search (will append links at end). While some people had iTunes issues related to third party software, this wasn't always a clear culprit. One page suggested the issue occurred where people who used Flip4Mac had also applied Monolingual (a program for deleting program support in other languages to save disk space). Upgrading Flip4Mac was supposed to give you a full version without files removed by Monolingual. However, at least one commenter mentioned that he was running the latest version of Snow Leopard, the latest version of Flip4Mac, had run Monolingual, and had the latest version of iTunes installed and working without problems. The Apple user forums included reports from individuals running Leopard (10.5.8) with the latest iTunes who encountered crashing when using the column browser, similar to Howard's experience, who did not have Flip4Mac installed, and who wondered whether Zoom mode was a factor, since it enables focus follows mouse. That person did not have problems with any other use of iTunes 9.1(79) (on the latest version of Snow Leopard -- 10.6.3) except when column browser mode was activated with Zoom, in which case iTunes would crash (again, like Howard's experience). This is a potential issue for low vision users.

In answer to some earlier questions, it's possible to roll back iTunes from Time Machine, but it's generally not easy to simply remove the current version and install an older version from a download (as opposed to from a backup). One of the things you need to adjust is the receipts file, because your Mac keeps track of which versions of software have been installed. This is how the software updater checks to see what new updates you might need.

Here's the link to the Apple Toolbox Blog page I found. The last comment gives a link to the Apple Discussion Forum thread on this topic:

Hi Folks,
I don't if this will help or not but there was an article that suggested that upgrading Flip4Mac helped with some iTunes 9.1 problems.

Hello all. I may have found the reason why iTunes was crashing, for me
at least. Perhaps others who had been experiencing the same will
benefit.

(A very helpful soul identified the prefs as the problem. So I reset
them, and then changed things, one by one, until iTunes crashed again.
Finally got it, I'm pretty sure.)
This is odd, really, as I don't normally have the mouse cursor
tracking the VO cursor, but had ended up with that setting after my
preferences had reset themselves -- as they tend to do every once in
awhile -- and decided to give that navigation method a try when I was
setting the prefs. Won't do that again!
And, I can now check out the new iTunes.
Happy (crash-free) listening.
