Hello!
I don't believe you should have had to go through that process. Apps that are 
in the app store might need permissions especially if they are acting like user 
agents, but having to go into single user mode or even terminal in recovery 
mode should not be required.
Also, I would want to know the writers profit mentality. I do use some free 
software but I get a little concerned if there is not way for the author to 
make some profit on his work.
