Hi Dave, It gets some getting used to, but after a while you may begin to actually like it. The Messages app was one of the iOS apps ported over using Catalyst. By doing this, it has made the app have a bigger feature set more similar to that of the iPhone and iPad. That is, things like special effects can now be displayed within the messages as well as reactions such as love, like, laugh etc.
