If it doesn't seem to work, after hitting the command-shift-l combination, try 
hitting command-tab to go to your Safari window.  I find that sometimes when I 
use the command-shift-l, it actually does open the link, but it does not 
automatically put the focus on the Safari window so I have to command-tab over 
to it.  It's not really a problem, it's just something I've noticed.
