I expect all the “not responding” messages will go away as Apple developers rewrite and replace older user interface components in Mac OS, some of which probably date back to the days of the NextStep operating system. So, whenever Mail has its user interface rewritten to take advantage of new components, the VoiceOver performance issues will probably be eliminated. That’s my educated guess. I’m confident that the problems are in user interface libraries and applications, more than in VoiceOver itself, which is why it will take time for old code that wasn’t originally designed with accessibility in mind to be superseded by something better. Interestingly, Apple developers do seem to be rewriting and replacing application user interfaces with new code over time. This year, for example, it’s the System Preferences application, which is reportedly going to be renamed to System Settings, marking a major redesign.
