Definitely do try this at home.
1. Create a new file by pasting the following two lines of text into a
blank TextEdit or Pico buffer:
1 2 3 4
1 2 3 4
The first line has the four digits separated by two spaces. The second
line has the four digits separated by two TAB's.
If you move the cursor around in the TextEdit window, you should here:
one space space two space space three space space four
on the first line, and
one tab tab two tab tab three tab tab four
on the second line.
In Pico, and also if you ssh into another system from the Terminal
window and edit the same contents with nano or pico on the remote
system, the first line will speak the same as it did in TextEdit, but on
the second line you will hear:
one one one two two two three three three four
If you replace figures with words on the second line, like this:
one two three four
and move the cursor along in either direction on that line, you may hear
parts of words, or maybe just the first or last letter of the word as
the cursor passes over the TAB characters next to it. Why is this, what
causes it, and how can it be mitigated, eliminated or prevented? Is it a
nano/pico bug? A VoiceOver bug?
You should also know that this does not occur when using nano or pico in
Windows, nor does it occur when using ssh to get into a Mac and edit the
same buffer using local pico.
