I never use the ribbon when using MS Word on the Mac. You cannot use keyboard shortcuts/accelerator keys, and it's very laborious to access the ribbon using VoiceOver. Much prefer accessing features through the menu bar when using Word on the Mac. Using word on a Mac is definitely different than on windows, but once you get the hang of it, it's very usable.
