By default a line starting with "* " (asterisk followed by a space will start creating a unordered list. These items will have a different style, but I don't remember its exact name. I also don't know how the different levels of lists get their own prefix. for example, if you create a bulleted lists as I describe above, and then hit tab at the beginning of the next line, it will change the bullet style to an open circle by default.
