I want to thank both Herb and Dave for their answers. However, I have no “Messages” icon in System Preferences on my Mac Mini.
The problem is that messages that have been deleted from my iPhones tend to remain on the Mac. I did open the Messages Toolbar on my Mac and selected the iMessages option whereupon I did find the Sync Button.
