Irfan, I'm speculating that fade-in/fade-out over perhaps 200 ms would work reasonably well, even for a person who doesn't see the results of the video edit.
Extracting the audio and editing it is, as you say, another story. But, I suspect most people who can see will want to have the video preserved.
