I am also curious as someone was asking me about this very issue the other day. they use the Trackpad to get to the login screen. Also, does anyone know if it’s ok to boot up an m1 Mac with an external drive plugged into the unit? This is how they got the login window. I do this all the time on my Intel Mac and have had no issues.
