That’s what I thought.  That’s what I eventually had to end up doing as well, 
since nothing else worked.
  Supposedly, according to an article I’ve found, you’re supposed to be able to 
adjust the volume of the AirPods themselves by putting your thumb on the stems, 
and swiping up or down from the sensors, but I’ve never been able to make that 
work.
