Lori, I believe you need to go into your Mail preferences for your Gmail account, and change the destination for deleted Mail items. I seem to remember that the default for Gmail is to send deleted mail to the Archive folder, where it can be saved forever. You can change this by going to Settings > Mail > Accounts. Then select your Gmail account > Advanced. Here you can select where you want your deleted items to go. The Trash folder should be one of the available options.
