I've never tried calc, but I've used bc for a long time when I need a quick calculation. It's a wrapper around dc, which is a postfix-format calculator perhaps more familiar to officionados of HP hand-held calculators. bc is algebraic in syntax. Both come with MacOS as far as I know.
