Hi, If your on an Intel based mack holding d9own the cmd key wile booting will bring up the boot menu or target disk mode and then you should be able to left arrow once and boot into the installer on the external disk. If this doesn't work, you may have to enable external disk boot. If on an m1 or later not sure how this works as I never had to do this.
