If you muted the System volume, all you need to do is raise or lower the volume to unmute. As a VoiceOver user, you can easily do this by pressing VO + either the hyphen or equals keys, which are located immediately to the left of the Delete key. If you need to hear the last phrase spoken by VoiceOver, simply use the command VO + Z, to have the phrase repeated.
