Classic Outlook works fine, if you are OK with the Microsoft way of doing things. MailMate is an advanced email client that makes more sense for power users. I still think keeping Apple Mail around is a good idea, as you will want it for composing email from other apps, and it seems to be unique in automatic reading the messages. They are all different clients with different strengths and weaknesses so figure out what works for you. I don't think Apple Mail should be giving you problems however, so I would try to figure out what the problem you are having is.
