If you want a 4TB drive, just buy one. No NAS required. If you really want a NAS, it's a simple matter of buying one of the choices from synology.com (you don't actually have to buy it from them) that are two bays, then get yourself another 4TB drive and mirror them. That way, if one drive goes bad, the other will be automatically mirroring it and save your bacon. That's the whole purpose of network-attached storage. The Synology cabinets all have the same Web interface and are pretty much guided setups. If you like, I or someone else on this list can help you go shopping for a cabinet you'll actually like and use.

Synology is not the only company that makes these things. Western Digital does also. I have a friend who has one and likes it very much. Two bays, he's happy as a clam. The setup was equally as simple and pretty much made for folks new to network-pattached storage solutions. I just don't remember the specific model, but they shouldn't be hard to find.

Grateful for your response. A 4 TB NAS drive would do for me. How about
accessibility and how do I go about setting it up? I’m not so very technical
nor do I have a lot of computer coding knowledge.

Andrew,

I have been using an external USB drive on a USB hub for years and years and
more years than I can count. It all just works. You get a new drive, connected
to your USB hub, connect that to your Mac, and away you go.

You want a NAS? Synology makes a lot of really good and reasonably accessible
ones, from the small – 2 to 4 bays – to the ridiculous – eight bays. How much
storage do you want? I have 96 TB, which, after turning on RAID6, gives me 64
TB. I am ecstatic about how much storage I have. I will never run out. I can
keep backups for almost ever! How big is big enough? Only you know.

Hi,

So Apple is stopping support for AFP protocol for time machine backups. I have
two questions:
1. Can Timemachine backup to a usb external drive attached to a third party
router, and if yes, how I would go about configuring this?
2. Can anyone recommend an external NAS device that’s accessible?

Many thanks

Andrew
