Lorie, What you describe doesn't bother me particularly, but here's a thought: I've not done too much with this, but did you know that you might be able to create what VO calls an activity, where you could go in and tell VO when you're using the messages app you can disable VO's announcing of notifications, then it will turn the announcement back on once you're out of messages? I may not be exactly right, but others more experienced might be able to chime in here.
