Hum,  this sounds like a switching issue.  In windows, you could often 
highlight a selection and press f7 or some such to make it spellcheck the 
selected text.

Mac doesn't work that way.  If you have the feature turned on, it will tell you 
as you read back that a word is misspelled.  Or, if you have your keyboard echo 
set to words as I have, it will tell you a word is misspelled when you complete 
it by pressing the space bar..  If you want to check that word, you highlight 
it and press control option shift M, and choose the correct spelling from the 
popup menu.

I find the notifications about misspelled words get in my way occasionally but 
other than that, it's a highly streamlined system and my writing has improved 
because of it.
