There are two status bars. One press of VO + m will get you to the
first one. Press VO + m again to get to the next status bar. On this
status bar is where you will find the time machine drop down menu.

Check the show time machine on the status bar. Now when you go to
the time machine menu on the status bar you will find a item called
back up now. A click of this item will do a back up.
