Hi Jim,
I believe the signup process for BookShare is through the web site:
http://www.bookshare.org/signUpType
Similarly, I think that in order to get lists of books, you need to
use the search facility from their main web page.
On your request for "The Crosstime Engineer", if this is the first
volume in the series by Leo Frankowski, a Google search for eBook
versions turned up this site (with the book in PDF format):
http://www.ebookstack.com/content/stargard-1-crosstime-engineer
The latest volumes in that series are available from Baen's
webscription site in multiple, DRM-free, eBook formats. The URL is:
http://www.webscription.net/
O'Reilly Books have also been publishing DRM-free eBooks in multiple
formats for some time -- generally, technical books related to
computing, but also acting as a distribution point for other
publishers. They have a an RSS feed for the "EBook Deal of the
Day" (multiple DRM-free formats of each book, for $9.99). The new
postings are not every day, and you can usually have a few days to buy
these. Monday's offering was a Mathematica Cookbook. Their RSS feed is:

Esther

Hi Jim,
I'm not sure that one can actually do this via email, though I am
certainly open to correction here.
On a different topic, I'd be most interested in your sonification
research. We're doing some of that kind of thing over here in
Dublin. If you would like to contact me off list I'd love to hear
about the work you're engaged in.
Cheers,
Dónal
