Hello Kerie,
If you want to go beyond just checking your current battery status (on
the menu bar) to monitoring you long term battery performance, there's
also a free application called coconutBattery that you can download
from the MacUpdate site:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19085/coconutbattery
This reports not only your current battery charge, but also tracks how
your maximum battery capacity changes with time, by checking and
reporting current battery capacity and original battery capacity,
along with the number of battery load cycles and the age of your Mac.
It will show up in your downloads folder, and if you open it (e.g., by
using VO-D to move to the dock and pressing "d o w" to navigate to
your downloads folder, VO-space to press it, up arrow to select the
last downloaded item (not voiced on my system), and press return to
open), you'll be warned this is an application downloaded from the
internet and asked if it's OK to open it. The app is completely
accessible; just VO-right arrow to read all the entries. It will
unpack into your Downloads folder, so you might want to copy or move
it to your applications folder (Command-Shift-A to move there in
Finder) for long term use.
I don't remember whether the zipped file for CoconutBattery unpacks
automatically when you open it. Zip files, along with most other
varieties of compressed files you might download, will unpack
automatically when you have the Unarchiver installed on your system.
You can download the Unarchiver from:
http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html
(This downloads as a disk image file with .dmg extension, which makes
it behave like a mounted disk, with privileges that facilitate
installation. Once you have installed the app, eject the .dmg file
from the FInder sidebar with Command-E. The .dmg file can be moved to
the trash.)
HTH
Cheers,
Esther
