Hi, You can use the area to add effects. However, you have to click on it by either using the physical mouse or focus the mouse on it with Vo-Command-F5 then use VO-Shift-Space to click. This method works perfectly well, unless you want multiple effects. This is where the issue is, and we yet have to see a fix for this.
I don't know of any other way, short of recording multiple tracks then mixing them together at this point, if you are thinking of recording multiple inputs and outputs. If not, though, I think you're out of luck until it's fixed.
