Hello Cathy, I work on doc files all the time using Pages, which is part of iWork09. I find that Pages keeps almost all the formatting intact.
TextEdit will also open doc files, so it all depends on what you want to do with them. For just reading, TextEdit is the simplest and cheapest solution since it comes with your Mac.
